Ingredients

  • 1/2 to 1 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups applesauce
  • 1 to 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon hot water
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup mixed nuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar and shortening together until well combined.
  2. Dissolve baking soda in hot water and add to applesauce mixture.
  3. Gradually add sifted flour and spices to the wet ingredients, mixing well.
  4. Fold in 1/2 cup of raisins and chopped nuts.
  5. Pour batter into a greased baking pan.
  6. Bake at 325°F (160°C) until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 45 minutes.
