- Sift the self-rising flour and then mix in the sugar.
- Melt the margarine and beat the eggs well.
- Add the margarine, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk to the flour and sugar mixture.
- Mix everything well until smooth.
- Grease and flour five cake pans.
- Divide the batter evenly into the five pans and bake at 350°F for approximately 20 minutes or until done.
- Allow the layers to cool completely.
- Spread the applesauce mixed with sugar between each layer to assemble the cake.
