- Cream shortening and sugar until light.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each.
- Make a paste of cocoa, coloring and water; add to the creamed mixture.
- Add salt and flour alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour.
- Add vanilla last, then mix soda with vinegar and add to the mixture.
- Do not beat at this stage; just fold gently until blended.
- Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
