Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup shortening or butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 1/4 cups sifted flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening or butter and sugar together.
  2. Add the egg and mix well.
  3. Sift together the cocoa, sifted flour, salt, and soda.
  4. Add alternately with buttermilk to the mixture; mix well.
  5. Add vanilla extract and mix.
  6. Pour batter into a greased 8 or 9-inch square pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F until done, about 25 minutes.
  8. Let cool and frost in the pan, then serve.
