Ingredients

  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 pound cooked and crumbled bacon
  • 4 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Combine the self-rising flour and sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal; set aside.
  3. Combine the buttermilk and baking soda, stirring until the soda dissolves.
  4. Add the buttermilk mixture to the bacon, shredded Cheddar cheese, and flour mixture, stirring until all ingredients are moistened.
  5. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly 4 to 5 times.
  6. Roll the dough to 1/2-inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  7. Place the cut biscuits on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake at 425°F for 10 to 12 minutes.
