Ingredients

  • 2 cans Great Northern beans, drained
  • 1 ham hock
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1/2 stalk celery, chopped
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 2 cups chopped ham
  • 4 cups hot water or chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Bring hot water or chicken broth to a boil in a large pot.
  2. Add drained Great Northern beans, ham hock, chopped carrots, chopped celery, chopped onion, minced garlic, dry mustard, and bay leaves to the boiling liquid.
  3. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 60 minutes.
  4. Remove the ham hock from the soup and discard.
  5. Stir in chopped ham.
  6. Simmer for an additional 30 minutes.
  7. Season with ground white pepper to taste before serving.
