Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup soft shortening
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon flavoring
  • 1/3 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Sift dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, salt) into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add shortening, 2/3 cup milk, and flavoring to the dry ingredients.
  3. Beat for 2 minutes until well combined.
  4. Add 1/3 cup milk and egg whites to the mixture.
  5. Beat for 2 more minutes until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F for approximately 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
