Tips & Substitutions

For a lighter texture, ensure the egg whites are beaten to stiff peaks before folding them into the lemon custard. You can substitute the rum with vanilla extract or omit it for a non-alcoholic version. If fresh strawberries are not available, consider using frozen berries, but make sure to thaw and drain them before layering.

Serving Suggestions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of cake for this trifle?

Yes, you can use pound cake or sponge cake as alternatives to angel cake. However, keep in mind that the texture and flavor may vary slightly, so choose a cake that complements the lemon custard.

How can I make this dessert ahead of time?

You can prepare the lemon custard and the angel cake pieces a day in advance. Layer them with strawberries just before serving to maintain freshness. This makes it a great make-ahead dessert for parties or gatherings.

Is it possible to make this recipe dairy-free?

Yes, you can substitute the heavy cream with a dairy-free alternative, such as coconut cream or a plant-based whipped topping. Just ensure your gelatin is vegetarian or plant-based if you want a fully dairy-free version.
