Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, try using a full-bodied red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon instead of Burgundy. If you can't find pearl onions, shallots make a great substitute. To save time, you can use pre-chopped vegetables. For a thicker sauce, increase the amount of flour in the slurry. Remember to adjust the seasoning after adding the slurry, as it may dilute the flavors.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this Beef Burgundy Pie with a simple green salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal. It pairs beautifully with crusty bread to soak up the delicious gravy. For a heartier option, consider serving it alongside mashed potatoes or roasted Brussels sprouts. This dish is perfect for cozy gatherings, providing comfort similar to American recipes like Monday Stew.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place the pie in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 20-30 minutes, or until heated through. You can also microwave individual portions, but be sure to cover them to retain moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of meat for this recipe?

Yes, you can substitute the beef with chicken or pork, but adjust the cooking time accordingly. Chicken may require less time to cook, while pork should be cooked until tender. Just ensure the meat is boneless and cut into similar-sized pieces for even cooking.

What can I use instead of red wine?

If you prefer not to use red wine, you can substitute with beef broth or a mixture of grape juice and vinegar. This will still give a savory depth to the dish without the alcohol. Just remember to adjust the seasoning since grape juice can add sweetness.

Can I prepare this dish in advance?

Absolutely! You can prepare the filling a day ahead and store it in the refrigerator. When you're ready to bake, just layer the potatoes on top and proceed with the baking instructions. This makes it a great option for meal prep or entertaining.
