  • 1/4 c. dry crushed oregano
  • 1 tsp. dried crushed basil
  • 1 medium bell pepper

  2. Heat 6 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet until almost smoking.
  3. Sear the steak on both sides until browned.
  4. Add sliced onion, crushed garlic, chopped tomatoes, chopped bell pepper, and herbs to the skillet.

  6. Add the whole mushrooms and red wine, then continue to simmer until the mushrooms are cooked.
  7. Serve hot with white rice.

Tips & Substitutions

For best results, partially freeze the flank steak before slicing to achieve uniform pieces. If you don't have dry red wine, you can substitute with beef broth for added flavor. Fresh herbs can be used instead of dried, but adjust quantities accordingly. Ensure to simmer the dish gently to maximize flavor absorption into the steak. This recipe is perfect for serving with a side of white rice or crusty bread.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the beefsteak pizzaiola hot, garnished with fresh basil or parsley for a pop of color. Pair it with white rice, which soaks up the delicious sauce, or serve alongside crusty bread for dipping. It also complements Italian recipes like Dreamy Spaghetti Casserole for a delightful meal spread.

Storage & Reheating

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, gently warm the beefsteak pizzaiola on the stove over low heat, adding a splash of water if needed to maintain moisture. This dish also freezes well; just ensure it's cooled completely before placing it in a freezer-safe container.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different cut of beef for this recipe?

Yes, while flank steak is traditional, you can use cuts like sirloin or ribeye for a different flavor and tenderness. Just adjust the cooking time accordingly, as some cuts may require less time to cook through.

How can I make this dish spicier?

To add heat, consider incorporating crushed red pepper flakes or fresh chili peppers when sautéing the onions and garlic. This will infuse the dish with a pleasant warmth without overpowering the other flavors.

Can I make beefsteak pizzaiola in advance?

Absolutely! This dish actually benefits from being made ahead of time, as the flavors deepen and improve overnight. Just store it in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving for optimal taste.
