Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour or cake flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 ounces melted unsweetened chocolate, cooled

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour the baking pans.
  3. Choose between a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan, two 9-inch round pans, or three 8-inch round pans.
  4. Measure all ingredients into a large mixing bowl.
  5. Blend for 1/2 minute on low speed, scraping the bowl constantly.
  6. Beat for 3 minutes on high speed, scraping the bowl occasionally.
  7. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
