Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees)
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add sugar, shortening, eggs, nutmeg, salt, and 2 cups of flour.
  3. Beat on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, for 30 seconds.
  4. Beat on medium speed, scraping occasionally, for 2 minutes.
  5. Stir in the rest of the flour until the mixture is smooth.
  6. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
  7. Dough is ready when indentation remains when touched with a floured finger.
  8. Stir the dough down by beating 25 strokes to reduce size by half.
  9. Roll the dough into shapes to form the body, head, and ears of the bears.
