A warm, comforting apple deep dish featuring tender wine sap apples with cinnamon and nutmeg, topped with a buttery crumbly crust and optional toasted almonds for added crunch.

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs. wine sap apples, sliced and tossed with juice of one lemon
  • 1 T. cornstarch
  • 1/2 c. white sugar
  • 1/4 t. cinnamon
  • 1/8 t. nutmeg
  • 1 c. flour
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • pinch salt
  • 6 T. soft cubed butter

Instructions

  1. Add sliced apples to the mixture and toss to coat.
  2. Arrange the apples along with sugar and spices in a 1-1/2 quart baking dish.
  3. Mix the flour, brown sugar, salt, and cubed butter with fingertips until crumbly, then sprinkle the mixture on top of the apples.
  4. Bake at 400°F for 45 minutes.
  5. About 15 minutes before baking is complete, sprinkle sliced toasted almonds on top if desired.
