Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups unsifted flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 cup margarine
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup ice water
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 6 cups sliced, peeled apples
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Measure 1 1/4 cups flour and 1 teaspoon salt into a bowl.
  2. Cut in 1/2 cup margarine with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  3. Toss in 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese.
  4. Stir in ice water; mix lightly.
  5. Form dough into a ball on a floured board; roll dough to fit a 12-inch pizza pan.
  6. Transfer dough to the pan; form a 1/2 inch rim.
  7. Combine 1/2 cup light brown sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg.
  8. Sprinkle half of the mixture over the pastry.
  9. Cut 1/4 cup margarine into the remaining mixture until crumbly; set aside.
  10. Arrange 6 cups sliced, peeled apples in overlapping circles on pastry.
  11. Sprinkle with 2 teaspoons lemon juice and the crumb mixture.
  12. Bake at 425°F for 35 minutes or until apples are tender.
