  • 3 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 Tbsp. black pepper

  • 2 large dry pepper pods
  • 4 Tbsp. salt
  • 5 tomato cans water
  • 1/4 lb. butter
  • 2 pt. cream

  3. Add the remaining catsup and Worcestershire sauce about 30 minutes before the stew is done.
  4. Let the flavors meld into the meat as it continues to cook.

Tips & Substitutions

For a more robust flavor, consider marinating the birds in a mix of Worcestershire sauce and chili powder overnight. If you don’t have birds on hand, chicken can be a suitable substitute, though cooking times may vary. Adding a splash of vinegar can help cut through the richness. Experiment with different spices for a unique twist, like adding smoked paprika for depth.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the bird stew hot, garnished with fresh herbs for added color and flavor. It pairs beautifully with crusty bread or a side of Beet And Pear Salad for a refreshing contrast. A dollop of sour cream can add creaminess, and a light dessert like Lime Sherbet can balance the richness of the stew. Consider a glass of white wine to complement the flavors.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover bird stew can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, gently warm it on the stove over low heat, adding a splash of water or broth if it thickens too much. For longer storage, freeze portions in freezer-safe bags for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other types of meat for this stew?

Yes, you can use chicken or turkey as alternatives to birds. Be mindful that cooking times may vary slightly; ensure the meat is fully cooked and tender. Using different meats will change the flavor profile, so adjust seasonings accordingly for the best taste.

How can I thicken the stew if it's too watery?

If your stew is too watery, you can thicken it by adding a slurry made from cornstarch and water. Mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and stir it into the simmering stew. Allow it to cook for a few more minutes until it thickens. You can also mash some of the potatoes to create a thicker consistency.

What can I do with leftover birds if I have any?

Leftover cooked birds can be shredded and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Use them in salads, sandwiches, or wraps. They can also be added to soups and casseroles for added protein. Alternatively, you could make a bird salad with mayonnaise, celery, and herbs for a delicious lunch option.
