Ingredients

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 2 Tbsp whiskey or rum
  • 2 Tbsp vinegar (cider)
  • 2 Tbsp powdered sugar
  • sifted flour (enough to make dough)

Instructions

  1. Roll 1/3 of the dough at a time very thin.
  2. Cut into 1 1/2 x 2-inch strips.
  3. Make a hole in the middle of each strip.
  4. Pull one end of the strip through the hole to form a bow tie shape.
  5. Fry in deep Crisco for 30 seconds on each side until golden.
  6. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using flavored whiskey or rum in the dough. If you don't have cider vinegar, white vinegar works as a substitute. When rolling out the dough, dust your surface with flour to prevent sticking. Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to achieve a crispy texture. For variations, try adding a hint of vanilla or almond extract for added depth.

Serving Suggestions

These delightful bow ties can be served as a sweet treat dusted with powdered sugar or paired with a fruit compote for added flavor. They also make a great accompaniment to coffee or tea. For a fun twist, try serving them alongside a dip, such as Lulu Paste Dip, for a delicious contrast.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover bow ties in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To maintain their crispiness, avoid refrigerating them, as moisture can make them soggy. Reheat in a toaster oven at 350°F for a few minutes to restore their crunch before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dough in advance. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to use, let it come to room temperature before rolling it out to ensure it's pliable.

What type of oil is best for frying?

Crisco is commonly used for frying these bow ties, but you can also use vegetable oil or canola oil. Choose an oil with a high smoke point to prevent burning and ensure even frying.

Can I bake these instead of frying?

While frying gives the traditional texture, you can bake them for a healthier option. Preheat your oven to 375°F, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake for about 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
