Ingredients

  • 1 pint half and half coffee cream
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • dry bread, cookies, or cake; cubed (3 to 4 cups)

Instructions

  1. Beat eggs gently without overbeating.
  2. Add sugar, salt, nutmeg, and vanilla; blend well.
  3. Add cubed bread, cookies, or cake; stir. Place a saucer on top to weigh down and prevent floats.
  4. Cook in the top of a double boiler with barely simmering water until a table knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Serve with a scoop of ice cream for each serving.
