Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 inch cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 3 apples, peeled and sliced thin
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup almonds
  • 1/2 pound Muenster or Monterey cheese, cut into small pieces
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 6 cups French or homemade bread, toasted and cut into 1/2-inch cubes

Instructions

  1. Combine brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and 4 cups water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer and stir for 20 minutes.
  2. Discard the spices from the syrup.
  3. In a large bowl, combine peeled and sliced apples, raisins, almonds, and cheese.
  4. Butter a 3-quart baking dish and layer half of the toasted bread cubes in the dish.
  5. Spoon half of the apple mixture over the bread layer.
  6. Repeat with the remaining bread cubes and apple mixture.
  7. Pour the syrup with melted butter over the layered ingredients.
  8. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown.
