Ingredients

  • 1.5 to 2 oz fresh yeast
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 6 to 7 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup melted or soft butter
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons oil

Instructions

  1. Cream the yeast with a good pinch of salt and sugar.
  2. Add warmed milk, sugar, eggs, and about 4 cups of flour; mix and beat well.
  3. Add melted or soft butter and oil; add more flour as needed and knead until dough is soft and pliant and comes from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Brush the top of the dough lightly with oil and let rise until double in bulk.
  5. Punch down the dough and form into 2 braids, loaves, or rolls.
  6. Let rise again; optional: brush with egg wash.
  7. Bake in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 40 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Brush very generously with melted butter after baking.
