Ingredients

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 package yeast
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/3 cup lukewarm water
  • 5 to 5 1/2 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over oats and let cool to lukewarm.
  2. Add shortening and yeast, softened in the lukewarm water.
  3. Add brown sugar and salt, then beat in enough flour to knead.
  4. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes.
  5. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape into rolls or bread.
  7. Let the shaped dough rise again.
  8. Bake at 375°F for 20 to 25 minutes for rolls or at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes for bread.
