Ingredients

  • 1 cup soft shortening
  • 2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or thick sour milk
  • 3 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Mix well the shortening, brown sugar, and eggs; stir in buttermilk.
  2. Combine the mixture with sifted dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, salt).
  3. Chill the dough.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of dough on a greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  5. Bake in a hot oven at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes.
