Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1 c. very warm water
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 3/4 c. butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • about 5 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, sprinkle yeast into very warm water; stir until dissolved.
  2. Add beaten eggs, sugar, melted butter, and salt, then beat in 5 cups of sifted all-purpose flour.
  3. On a lightly floured pastry sheet, knead dough until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
  4. Place dough in a large greased bowl and refrigerate, covered.
  5. Use a third of dough at a time as needed.
  6. This dough can be made about a week ahead, if desired.

Tips & Substitutions

For optimal results, use very warm water (about 110°F) to activate the yeast. If you don't have all-purpose flour, bread flour can be a suitable substitute, providing a chewier texture. To save time, consider making a double batch and freezing half of the dough. This recipe is versatile, and you can also incorporate herbs or cheese for added flavor.

Serving Suggestions

These butterhorn dinner rolls are perfect alongside a hearty soup or salad. They also pair beautifully with Helen Rushton'S Apple Pie for a delightful finish to your meal. Consider serving them warm with flavored butters or spreads for an enhanced dining experience during family gatherings or holiday feasts.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze them in a resealable plastic bag for up to a month. To reheat, wrap the rolls in foil and warm in a 350°F oven for about 10-15 minutes, ensuring they stay soft and delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do if my rolls come out too dense?

If your rolls are dense, it could be due to over-kneading or insufficient rising time. Ensure you knead just until smooth and elastic, and allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free area until it doubles in size for the best texture.
