- Put sugar, cold water, raisins, lard, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt in a saucepan and boil for 3 minutes.
- Let the mixture cool.
- Add candied fruits, chopped nutmeats, sifted flour, baking powder, and soda dissolved in a little hot water and molasses to the cooled mixture.
- Mix well until combined.
- Pour the batter into a well-greased and floured cake pan.
- Bake in a 350°F oven for 30 to 45 minutes.
