Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 cup soft butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Set the oven to 350°F and start preheating 10 minutes before baking.
  2. Sift the flour; measure and resift three times with salt, baking soda, and spices using a beater.
  3. Cream the butter until smooth; add sugar and egg, and beat until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Add molasses and beat vigorously for 2 minutes.
  5. Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the batter, beginning and ending with the flour.
  6. Pour the batter into a prepared pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
  7. Serve warm with whipped cream or sauce.
