Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 5 c. flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. shortening (Crisco)
  • 1 1/2 to 2 c. buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in 2 tablespoons of very warm water and set aside.
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, sugar, and salt in a bowl, then add shortening (Crisco).
  3. Add buttermilk to the dissolved yeast.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients with the yeast and buttermilk until just combined.
  5. Roll the dough to a thickness of 3/8 to 1/2 inch.
  6. Cut into biscuits and place on a baking sheet.
  7. Bake at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes until golden brown.
