Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup soft butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix thoroughly butter, shortening, confectioners sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla.
  2. Blend in flour and salt.
  3. Divide the dough in half and blend red food coloring into one half.
  4. Shape 1 teaspoon of dough from each half into a 4-inch rope by rolling on a floured board.
  5. Place ropes side by side and press together lightly.
  6. Twist and curve the top to form the handle of the cane.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes at 375°F.
  8. Mix crushed peppermint candy and sugar and remove the candy canes from the baking sheet.
