Ingredients

  • 1 cup popcorn
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup white syrup
  • 1/4 cup molasses

Instructions

  1. Pop the popcorn; remove unpopped kernels and set aside.
  2. Combine brown sugar, butter or margarine, cream of tartar, white syrup, and molasses in a saucepan.
  3. Cook over low heat until the mixture reaches 240°F (soft ball stage), approximately 2 minutes of boiling.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.
  5. Pour the caramel mixture over the popped popcorn and mix well to coat evenly.
  6. Spread the coated popcorn onto two large dripper pans or cookie sheets.
  7. Bake in a 200°F oven for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Remove from oven, transfer onto waxed paper, and cool before breaking into pieces.
