Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups oatmeal (Quaker quick)
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup melted margarine
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate bits
  • 1 (14 oz.) bag vanilla caramels

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease a 9x13-inch pan.
  3. Combine oatmeal, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add melted margarine and mix until crumbly.
  5. Reserve 1 cup of the mixture for topping.
  6. Press the remaining mixture onto the bottom of the prepared pan and bake for 10 minutes.
  7. Cool the base.
  8. Top with chopped nuts and semi-sweet chocolate bits.
  9. In a medium saucepan, melt the vanilla caramels with water over low heat, stirring until smooth.
  10. Remove from heat and drizzle over nuts and chocolate, leaving a 1/4-inch border.
  11. Sprinkle the reserved oatmeal mixture over the drizzle.
  12. Return to the oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until golden brown.
  13. Cool completely.
  14. Chill until the chocolate sets.
  15. Cut into bars and store tightly covered in a cool, dry place.
