Ingredients

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Combine boiling water and chopped dates; let cool.
  2. Cream shortening and sugar; add beaten eggs and vanilla.
  3. Sift cocoa, flour, and salt together.
  4. Add dry ingredients and date mixture into the creamed mixture.
  5. Pour batter into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  6. Spread batter evenly in the pan.
  7. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and chopped nuts.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 30 minutes.
  9. Allow to cool, then cut into squares.
