Ingredients

  • 1 package yellow cake mix (2-layer size)
  • 1/2 cup butter or oleo, melted
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups light corn syrup
  • 3 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 2/3 cups flaked coconut

Instructions

  1. Measure 2/3 cup of dry cake mix and set aside.
  2. Combine remaining cake mix, melted butter, and 1 egg, mixing well.
  3. Press the mixture into the bottom of a greased 13 x 9-inch pan.
  4. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes.
  5. In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, corn syrup, melted chocolate, and vanilla.
  6. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until smooth and heated through.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the flaked coconut.
  8. Pour the coconut mixture over the baked cake layer and spread evenly.
  9. Allow to cool completely before cutting into bars.
