Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar and shortening together until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs and vanilla, beating well after each addition.
  3. Sift together salt, flour, baking soda, and cocoa powder.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, starting and ending with dry ingredients, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
