Ingredients

  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup mixed candied fruit
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup milk (lukewarm)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup nuts

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in a little warm water and let it activate.
  2. Mix the shortening, salt, sugar, egg, vanilla, and lukewarm milk together.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the milk mixture, then incorporate the flour gradually, mixing well.
  4. Stir in the raisins, candied fruit, and nuts.
  5. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  6. Divide the dough into three equal parts.
  7. Roll each part into a long, even strip.
  8. Braid the three strips together and form into a wreath or braid shape.
  9. Let the braided dough rise until light and puffy.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 30 minutes, until golden brown.
