Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Robin Hood flour
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Spoon flour into a dry measuring cup, level off, and pour into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add remaining dry ingredients to the flour and stir well.
  3. Add shortening, buttermilk, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix.
  4. Beat the mixture for 300 strokes by hand or for 2 minutes with an electric mixer.
  5. Bake at 400°F until done.
