Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 6 tablespoons cocoa
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, soda, and cocoa.
  4. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the shortening mixture, alternating with the buttermilk and red food coloring, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  5. Mix until the batter is smooth and well combined.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into two greased 9-inch cake pans.
  7. Bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool before frosting with your favorite icing.
