Coconut Date Bars

- Combine the cut dates, water, and sugar in a saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, then simmer, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice.
- Sift together flour and salt; stir in brown sugar.
- Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in coconut and chopped nuts.
- Press half of the crumb mixture into the bottom of a greased 13 x 9-inch pan.
- Spread the date filling over the crust.
- Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top and press down lightly.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Cool before cutting into bars.
