- Place celery seed, salt, and whole cloves in a bag.
- Slice medium-sized cucumbers into about 1/4-inch slices.
- Cover with a mixture of 2 cups lime and 2 gallons water.
- Let stand for 24 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Rinse cucumbers well and soak in clear, cold water for 3 hours, then drain.
- Bring vinegar, sugar, and spices to a boil.
- Let the mixture cool slightly, then pour over the drained cucumbers and let stand overnight.
- Next morning, boil the mixture for 40 minutes, simmering after it comes to a boil.
- Pack pickles into sterilized jars and pour hot liquid over them, then seal.
