Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 rounded teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Dissolve cocoa in boiling water.
  3. Add baking soda to hot coffee and mix well.
  4. Combine flour and baking powder.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the cocoa mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  6. Beat only until the flour disappears; the batter will be thin.
  7. Pour batter into greased baking pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
