- Combine chopped dates, hot water, and soda in a small bowl.
- Set aside for about 5 minutes to allow the mixture to fizz and soften.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar.
- Add the egg and mix well.
- Stir in the flour and salt, mixing until just combined.
- Add the date mixture and chopped nuts to the batter, mixing thoroughly.
- Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow to cool before removing from the pan and slicing.
