Ingredients

  • 4 slices bread
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup raisins
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • a pinch of salt
  • 2 1/2 cups milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Butter a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish.
  3. Lightly toast the bread slices.
  4. Spread butter on each slice.
  5. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  6. Put two toast slices together to make sandwiches.
  7. Remove crusts from the sandwiches and cut each into 4 rectangles.
  8. Arrange the bread rectangles in a single layer in the casserole dish.
  9. Sprinkle raisins over the bread.
  10. Beat eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla, and salt (if using) together.
  11. Scald the milk and gradually pour it into the egg mixture, stirring constantly to combine.
  12. Pour the custard mixture over the bread in the casserole.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes, until set and golden.
