Tips & Substitutions

For the best flavor, use pork belly or leg, as they stay juicy after boiling. If you want a spicier kick, add some sliced chili peppers to the stir-fry. You can substitute green and red peppers with bell peppers or even snap peas if you prefer. When mixing the sauces, adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar or using honey for a different flavor profile. This dish is a fantastic way to use leftover Braised Pork.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Double Cooked Pork hot over steamed rice or alongside fried rice for a delightful meal. For a complete meal, consider pairing it with a simple cucumber salad or pickled vegetables to balance the richness of the pork. This dish also works well as part of a larger spread of Chinese recipes for a family gathering or dinner party.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply stir-fry on medium heat for about 5 minutes or until heated through. You can also microwave it in short intervals, making sure to cover it to retain moisture. Avoid reheating multiple times to maintain quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of meat for this recipe?

Yes, you can substitute pork with chicken or beef, but cooking times may vary. Ensure to adjust the boiling time according to the meat's thickness to achieve the right tenderness. Remember that different meats will impart different flavors, so choose according to your preference.

What if I can't find sweet soybean paste?

If sweet soybean paste is unavailable, you can use hoisin sauce as a substitute, which offers a similar sweetness. Mix in a bit of soy sauce to mimic the flavor profile. Adjust the sugar in the recipe accordingly to maintain the taste balance.

Is it possible to make this dish ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the pork in advance, boil it, and slice it. Store the slices in the fridge and stir-fry them with the vegetables and sauce just before serving. This helps the flavors meld together, making it a great choice for meal prep.
