Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 tablespoon hot water
  • 1/2 pound dates
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and brown sugar together.
  2. Add eggs and vanilla, mixing well.
  3. Incorporate flour, salt, and dissolved soda into the mixture.
  4. Set the dough aside.
  5. In a saucepan, cook dates, sugar, and water until the mixture is paste-like.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a greased cookie sheet.
  7. Indent the center of each cookie with a spoon and fill with the cooked date paste.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 10 minutes.
