Ingredients

  • 1 lb seeded raisins
  • 2 c water
  • 1 c lard or Crisco
  • 1 c cold water
  • 2 c sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cloves
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 Tbsp baking soda
  • 4 c flour
  • 1/2 c walnuts

Instructions

  1. Stew the raisins in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients, except walnuts, to the stew and mix well.
  3. Stir in the walnuts if desired.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
