Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp. warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp. salt

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Let stand for 5 minutes.
  3. Add sugar, shortening, eggs, warm milk, salt, and 4 to 4 1/2 cups of flour.
  4. Beat at low speed of an electric mixer for one minute.
  5. Gradually stir in enough flour to make a soft dough.
  6. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  7. Knead until smooth and elastic.
  8. Shape dough into balls and place in a greased bowl.
  9. Cover and let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 hour.
  10. Punch down the dough.
  11. Roll each ball into a 12-inch circle.
  12. Spread butter on each circle and roll back up.
  13. Place on a greased baking sheet.
  14. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
  15. Bake at 400°F until golden brown.
