Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. butter or margarine
  • 4 1/2 c. sugar
  • 3 tsp. vanilla
  • 6 eggs
  • 6 (1 oz.) sq. unsweetened chocolate
  • 6 c. sifted cake flour
  • 3 tsp. soda
  • 1 heaping tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 c. ice water

Instructions

  1. Cream butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until fluffy.
  2. Blend in melted chocolate.
  3. Sift together dry ingredients: cake flour, soda, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Add alternately with ice water to the chocolate mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  5. Pour batter into three greased and wax paper-lined 8-inch layer pans.
  6. Bake in a moderate oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
