- Beat egg yolks with 1 cup sugar until thick and pale.
- Cream shortening and the remaining 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
- Gradually add 1/2 cup flour to the egg yolk mixture, mixing well.
- Sift together the remaining flour and baking powder.
- Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with flour.
- Stiffly beat the egg whites and fold them gently into the batter.
- Pour the batter into greased and floured pans to make 4 layers.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes.
