Ingredients

  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Beat egg yolks with 1 cup sugar until thick and pale.
  2. Cream shortening and the remaining 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Gradually add 1/2 cup flour to the egg yolk mixture, mixing well.
  4. Sift together the remaining flour and baking powder.
  5. Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with flour.
  6. Stiffly beat the egg whites and fold them gently into the batter.
  7. Pour the batter into greased and floured pans to make 4 layers.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes.
