Fran's Stewed Red Cabbage

Ingredients

  • 1 red cabbage (about 2 lbs.)
  • 2 cups water
  • salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
  • 14 cup white vinegar
  • 12 apple, diced
  • 2 -3 whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 12 tablespoons flour

Instructions

  1. wash and cut the core from the cabbage.
  2. coarsely shred and put in a dutch oven.
  3. add the water and salt to taste.
  4. bring water to a boil.
  5. add the veggie shortening.
  6. cook about 30 min.
  7. add the vinegar, apple, and cloves.
  8. cover and simmer 2.5-3 hours.
  9. add sugar.
  10. melt butter in a separate pan.
  11. add flour and stir until combined.
  12. add to cabbage mixture and stir until thickened.
  13. add salt and pepper to taste.
