Ingredients

  • 1 lb. fresh okra
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • cooking oil for deep frying

Instructions

  1. Wash the okra and trim the ends.
  2. Slice the okra into bite-sized pieces and set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine all-purpose flour, yellow cornmeal, salt, ground red pepper, and ground black pepper; mix well.
  4. In a shallow bowl, beat together the egg and milk.
  5. Dip the okra pieces into the milk mixture, coating well.
  6. Fry about one-third of the okra at a time in deep, hot oil for 3 to 4 minutes or until tender and golden brown.
  7. Drain the fried okra on paper towels and serve.
