Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 cups sliced apples
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup sugar for apples
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix the egg with enough water to make 1/2 cup of liquid.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients—flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and cinnamon—with the butter and the egg mixture. Mix until well blended.
  4. Divide the dough into two equal parts. Roll each part out to fit a 9 x 13-inch pan, one for the bottom crust and one for the top crust.
  5. Place the bottom crust into the prepared pan.
  6. Layer the sliced apples over the bottom crust. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
  7. Cover the apples with the top crust. Prick the top crust several times to vent.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour or until the crust is golden brown.
