Ingredients

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a shallow 2-quart baking dish.
  3. In a small bowl, stir together brown sugar and 2 tablespoons cocoa; set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, 3 tablespoons cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Add milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and stir until moistened.
  6. Stir in chocolate chips and chopped nuts.
  7. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  8. Sprinkle the brown sugar-cocoa mixture over the batter.
  9. Slowly pour hot water over the top of the batter without stirring.
  10. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the top of the cake is set.
  11. Let stand for 30 minutes, then top with whipped topping before serving.
