Ingredients

  • 1/4 pound butter or margarine
  • allspice
  • nutmeg
  • cinnamon
  • paprika
  • 2 bay leaves
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 1 cup red wine or cream sherry
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 small onion
  • mushrooms
  • parsley

Instructions

  1. Melt 1/4 pound of butter or margarine in a pan.
  2. Add a dash of allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, paprika, and 1 or 2 bay leaves.
  3. Add cut-up pieces of meat in strips and lay in the butter.
  4. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  5. Turn heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. Turn the meat and simmer again for a few minutes.
  7. Add a cup of red wine or cream sherry and a cup of water to the meat.
  8. Dice a small onion and add it to the liquid.
  9. Add mushrooms and some chopped parsley.
  10. Keep heat on low so it doesn't dry out.
  11. Add one can of tomato soup and one can of water, then simmer slowly until the meat is done, about 10 minutes.
  12. Serve the stew over rice.
